My Approach

I believe work should be a joy. I always tell my team that if they stop enjoying what they do we need to talk.  Along those lines, here’s a thought I like.

The supreme accomplishment is to blur the line between work and play.

That said, my approach to work looks something like this:

My goal when I lead is empowering others to make decisions and complete the work while I focus on setting direction and guiding, assisting, and coaching.  My primary goal with the team is growth and coaching is my main tool for that.  Often, I initiate change that helps the team grow, learn, and develop.

These leadership practices of Kouzes and Posner describe much of what I try to do with my team:

My team has become a model for collaboration and leadership at the City of Roseville.  I think my focus on growth and empowerment has helped them achieve that.  Helping my team grow into skilled and capable professionals and then watching them succeed is one of the most satisfying things about my work.

I consider any of the following to be time exceedingly well spent:

  • Listening
  • Learning
  • Prioritizing
  • Coaching my team
